Electrical Control Cabinets Move Effortlessly with Air Casters
A major manufacturer of AC & DC adjustable speed drives for the Oil & Gas industry decided to use Air Planks to move variable frequency drive control cabinets through their production line allowing ease of movement, faster installation of heavy components, with a 25% savings in time and labor. The omni-directional capabilities enable flexible variable path movements to enhance production optimization. The 3,000-pound control cabinets can be moved with as little as 3 pounds of pushing force through the production assembly process.
The Air Caster equipment includes standard LM series aluminum Air Planks modified with a cross beam to allow for easy fork lift loading of the palletized control cabinets at the beginning of the production line. The cabinets move through seven strategic production stations, each having defined assembly operations, to minimize material handling of heavy individual components. The planks are equipped with a U-shaped handle with an integral mast mounted air connection, and rear no load wheels allowing the planks to be tipped back and handled easily while moving unloaded.
The decision to use planks by the customer was based on ease of movement, elimination of forklifts through the assembly process, and strategic material handling for subcomponents to reduce assembly time to meet tight production schedules. One comment from the Senior Design Engineer in response to production employee’s reaction when seeing the planks operate on their plant floor tells all. “Everyone’s eyes widened when they first saw the casters operate; they were very impressed. There was quite a buzz on the shop floor.”
